Future Students—Admissions

Prospective Transfer Eligibility and Preparation

Requirements for admission are explained in the UC publications, Introducing the University and Answers for Transfers. Students who did not meet the requirements for admission as a freshman during their high school years must complete the following requirements for transfer admission, listed as items A and B below. We advise ALL applicants to complete these requirements:
  1. Complete 60 semester or 90 quarter units of transferable college credit with a grade point average of at least 2.4 for California residents and at least 2.8 for nonresidents (no more than 14 semester or 21 quarter units may be taken Pass/Not Pass).
  2. Complete the following seven-course pattern requirement, earning a grade of C or better in each:
    1. Two courses in English composition.
    2. One course in mathematics beyond intermediate algebra, such as college algebra, precalculus, or statistics.
    3. Four courses from among at least two of the following areas:
      • Arts and humanities
      • Behavioral and social sciences
      • Biological and physical sciences

In addition to this course pattern, students who know their intended major are encouraged to complete as much of the lower-division preparation for the major as possible. Students who have not identified a major are encouraged to take courses that meet general education requirements while researching majors and trying course work in potential major subject areas. Students attending a California community college are advised to refer to the ASSIST website for specific articulation (course equivalency and requirement satisfaction) information.

UCSB has established transfer admission agreements (TAA) for fall terms with all California community colleges. The TAA includes all majors in the College of Letters and Science excluding Computer Science, B.A., Dance, B.A., and majors with B.F.A. or B.Music objectives. Transfer admission agreements have also been established for majors in the College of Engineering with many of the California community colleges. Students should refer to the ASSIST website under articulation agreements by major between UCSB and their community college for more specific details.

Please note: Students are strongly encouraged to begin taking English composition and mathematics course work early in their academic careers. Early completion of the minimum requirements for admission makes an applicant more competitive for admission spaces available.

How to Apply

OCS advising appointments are highly recommended in order to determine the number of UC transferable units, the student's coursework GPA, and the courses required to satisfy pre-major and general education requirements.

When ready to apply, prospective students must send the following materials to the UCSB Ventura Center:

  • Informal transcripts from all colleges attended
  • A completed UC application
